LiDAR scanning overview

LiDAR reality-capture data is the top-choice input for 01Spatial mapping. Professional scanners combine visual imagery, camera poses, metric scale, and 3D geometry, producing reliable, high-quality Spatial Maps for building- and campus-scale projects.

Why LiDAR is the top choice

Compared with standard video alone, LiDAR data usually provides more stable scale, more complete geometry, and a more reliable device trajectory. It is especially valuable for:

  • Malls, museums, stadiums, factories, airports, and large campuses.
  • Long corridors, connected rooms, multiple floors, and visually repetitive structures.
  • Projects that must align with CAD / BIM, robot navigation, or real-world distance.
  • Production delivery where a high first-build success rate and lower rescan risk matter.

Required data

Vendor export structures differ, but a valid input must contain all three of the following:

  1. Visual imagery: typically panoramas embedded in E57, or independent panoramas matched to poses. A point cloud without images cannot produce a visual-localization map.
  2. Camera positions and orientations: every image must be placed in one shared coordinate frame.
  3. Metric 3D geometry: usually an E57, LAS, or vendor point-cloud export.

E57 is a common reality-capture exchange format that can store images, scanner positions, and 3D points together. Panoramas can be cube faces or 2:1 equirectangular images; the selected brand adapter determines how 01Spatial reads them. Do not combine unrelated projects, unregistered stations, or floors that use different coordinate frames in one package.

No additional spatial-reference configuration

LiDAR exports already carry scale, poses, and spatial coordinates. They do not require 01Spatial Reference Boards, Map Configurator, GCPs (Ground Control Points), Tie Points, or Scale Bars. Prepare the brand-specific export, upload it, and start the build.

Capture principles

  • Include panoramas or color imagery in the export.
  • Resolve registration errors, double walls, ghost points, and isolated stations.
  • Increase scan density at entrances, turns, stairs, transitions, and occlusions.
  • Minimize moving people, vehicles, and machinery.
  • Treat mirrors, glass, and reflective metal carefully.
  • Split very large or multi-floor sites into manageable, coherent exports.

Static tripod scanners commonly use roughly 2–5 m station spacing. Handheld or mobile scanners commonly use roughly 1–3 m effective panorama spacing, with tighter coverage in complex areas.

Upload

For LiDAR brands that use one ZIP, choose either:

  • Local: select the prepared ZIP from this computer and keep the page open until the upload finishes.
  • Cloud, recommended for large files: upload the ZIP to a drive supported by the current Portal interface, then provide a direct file link so the server can download it.

CHCNAV currently uses a local multi-file input for panoramas, a pose TXT, and an optional LAS file rather than the single-ZIP cloud flow. Follow the guide for the selected brand and treat the current Portal interface as authoritative.

Choose your scanner guide

01Spatial supports professional exports from Matterport, FARO, NavVis, Leica RTC, Hexagon RealSLAM, XGRIDS, FJD, and CHCNAV. Select the guide that matches the actual scanner. Renaming a file does not convert it to another brand's data format.
